File names too long for WindowsXP
By: douglas - Misc - 5/21/2004 9:31:00 AM

Problem:
File name is too long for WindowsXP to move, rename, copy or delete. WindowsXP command prompt will also not allow you to move, rename, copy or delete file.

Solution:
Go to DOS command prompt:
Start Run type in 'command'

Note: type in 'command', not 'cmd'.

'command' will allow you to access files in DOS long file name format. You may still see files and folders with their full names, but will need to access them using the DOS long file name format.

DOS long file name format:
First 6 characters of the filename, excluding spaces, followed by ~1 and the extension.

Examples:
Actual File Name: this file name is too long for DOS.txt
DOS long file name format: thisfi~1.txt

Actual Folder Name: this folder name is too long for DOS
DOS folder name: thisfo~1

You should be able to rename the file to a shorter file name using this format.
